One of the more popular resolutions for the New Year is to try to have weight loss. Many of us, however, struggle with how to achieve this goal, and without some research and a clearcut plan, it can often feel like we’re blindly stumbling around in the dark.

Turn your time on the phone into a weight loss workout. Instead of sitting down while you are talking, get up and move around when you are on the phone. This can be a simple walk, just to get the blood flowing. You can walk across the room or take care of some chores. Burning a few calories here and there can really add up!

Cut up some potatoes into half-inch fries. Then, toss them in a big bowl with one tablespoon of oil, sprinkle a little salt, pepper, and rosemary to add flavor, and then bake them in one layer at a temperature of 400 degrees for half an hour. Turn them over and bake for another 10 minutes. They are great with ketchup and have lower fat content, so you won’t miss the deep-fried ones. Avoid food near bedtime to help keep the weight off. While this is often easier said than done, it is worth it to heed this advice; any food that you eat at bedtime is eventually stored as fat, rather than being burned off. Keep yourself busy in the evening.

Try doing cardio to help you lose weight instead of weight training, which focuses on muscle building. Weight training is essential in building muscles, but without cardio, you won’t burn fat. Aerobic exercise helps you lose weight more effectively than strength conditioning does because it boosts your heart rate while also regulating your respiration.

In order for your diet to be a success, reward yourself when you exhibit good behavior. Rewards can be anything from getting a massage, taking the night off and renting a movie, or going shopping and buying something new. If you’ve lost enough weight, buy yourself a new wardrobe that you can admire yourself wearing.

Find a friend with whom you can exercise. This can help make your exercise feel more like socialization than hard work. You and your buddy can give each other encouragement and share stories of successes and failures. Being in good company will make exercising for weight loss so much fun, that you will surely look forward to it.

There are times during the weight loss journey when one is tempted to dine at a restaurant. Know that portions at restaurants are bigger than what you need. Consider asking your server to bring a to-go container with your meal, and put half of your plate into the container immediately. You’ll eat less then and have an easy meal for lunch.

One way to cut down on the amount of food you eat is to find a dining partner. Eating alone can cause you to focus only on your food. If you can’t eat with someone, grab the newspaper or a book to read with your meal.

After a few months of exercising and eating healthier foods, go through your clothes and throw away the ones that do not fit you anymore. This will help you reflect on your success and show you that you are a new person. Besides giving you incentive to maintain your new weight, it will encourage you to keep up the good work and push on in your weight loss journey.

Keeping yourself occupied will assist you in losing weight. If you have too much free time during a diet, it is likely that you will start thinking about food cravings. Staying busy will prevent this sort of behavior.
